Punch needle embroidery has a long history dating back to at least Medieval times and possibly even as far back as the ancient Egyptians. It has been used to decorate religious vestments and for rug making to pass the time on long sea voyages. You may have seen examples of punch needle on Gypsy garments or even queens dresses. Join local craft artist Charlotte Carr for this fun and creative DIY class. Learn to make gorgeous wall hangings, pillows, fashion embellishments and more!
It’s like painting with thread!!! In this class you will learn the basics of fine punch needle embroidery, sometimes referred to as Russian Punch. As well as the kit and instruction, you will be able to observe some finished patterns so you can see the possibilities. You will leave the class with enough knowledge to design and punch a pattern of your own making as well as spending time with a group of fun loving people.
Meet New Paltz resident Charlotte, your teacher: “I have been crafting since a teen. I have knitted, crocheted, made stained glass, lamp worked glass beads, quilted, made garments, embroidered (Hand and machined), hand dyed yarn and wool for rug hooking, rug punching and weaving. I have finally settled in with weaving and punching…..that is until I see something I don’t know how to do yet. My advice, never stop learning that way you will never be bored.”
